Cutting-edge audio and electronics along with quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) make the A6 nearly irresistible, as does its impressive fuel economy. Source: KBB.com* Finely finished interior; plenty of technology in the cabin; strong, supercharged V6; fuel-efficient four-cylinder and diesel engines; sporty handling. Source: Edmunds* With its sharp lines, short overhangs, and fashion-defining touches like the optional LED headlights and standard LED taillights, the 2014 A6 has an undeniable presence. Yet looking beyond its great beauty also reveals great engineering, as the body features a drag coefficient of just 0.26, a wind-cheating figure that lets the A6 more easily slip through the air, paying dividends in quietness, fuel efficiency, and performance alike. The cabin of the A6 upholds the Audi tradition of blending style and class. Crisp instrumentation, tastefully contrasting colors, and aluminum door sill inlays create a warm, inviting ambience. Supple leather covers the surface of every seat in the house, and three-zone automatic climate control ensures that rear passengers remain almost as spoiled as those in the front, who also enjoy heated seats. The Audi A6 is proof of how optimizing every part can lead to a greater whole. Its 2.0L TFSI engine features turbocharging and Audi FSI direct injection, helping it keep pace with larger engine competitors while achieving superb mileage. The available 3.0L TFSI V6 engine stands ready with a 310hp rush and the Tiptronic automatic transmission features eight speeds, the highest in the luxury segment. Top it off with communicative steering, a firm yet comfortable ride, and the wet weather traction of Audi quattro all-wheel drive, the widespread praise of the A6 driving experience should be no surprise. A suite of available technologies has made the A6 a true champion of progress. Audi connect with Google Earth imagery and Wi-Fi connectivity for up to eight passenger devices allows multiple ways to stay connected. You can also access information and navigate entirely with your voice in just a few commands. Audi MMI Radio Plus with ten speakers, a single CD player with mp3 playback capability and iPod integration offer a premium sounds system. Safety on this sleek ride has not been ignored either, as it includes rain/light sensors for both windshield wipers and headlights as well as an array of standard airbags including head curtains. For 2014, Audi has added a 3.0L TDI 6-cylinder diesel option rated at 240 hp and 428 ft-lb of torque to the A6 lineup. This engine provides an impressive fuel economy rating of 24 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. The TDI is mated to an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission and Audi's superb Quattro all-wheel drive, and it will scoot the car to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds, according to Audi. Elsewhere, the turbocharged 2.0L engine increases to an output of 220 horsepower, up from 211. 3.0 models are offered in Premium Plus and Prestige trims. A new Black Optic package offers a black grille with high-gloss surround and gloss-black window surround, along with 20-inch titanium finish wheels fitted with summer tires.
The A6 lineup includes models with turbocharged 4-cylinder (2.0T), supercharged V6 (3.0T) power, and an all-new direct-injected turbodiesel V6 (3.0 TDI). A6 2.0T models are offered with either front-wheel drive or quattro all-wheel drive, while 3.0T models all include quattro. 2.0T models generate 220 horsepower, while 3.0T models get a V8-like 310 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The 3.0 TDI, meanwhile, delivers 240 horsepower and an impressive 428 ft-lb of torque.
Base models of the A6 with front-wheel drive (labeled FrontTrack) include a continuously variable automatic transmission, but the rest of the lineup includes an excellent 8-speed Tiptronic automatic. On any of these models, a rear-biased version of Audi's quattro system sends 60 percent of torque to the rear wheels under normal driving, giving it more balanced handling, while the A6's construction uses a combination of aluminum panels and high-strength steel to save weight and improve the A6's nimble, responsive feel.
Thanks to Audi Drive Select, you can adjust the attitude of the steering and throttle, as well as transmission behavior. Inside the A6 is a beautifully detailed interior, with a wraparound design, supportive seats and just the right amount of bright trim. Inside in most models there's 3- or 4-zone automatic climate control and ventilated seats are available. In addition, there are some standout technology features, such as built-in WiFi connection, Google Earth maps for the navigation system and integrated Google Local Search.
The A6 is also strong on safety features, with a Pre Sense system, which initiates protective measures if it anticipates a collision, included in all A6 models. There's also available adaptive cruise control with stop and go and an Audi side assist option that warns of vehicles potentially in the driver's blind spot. Those willing to splurge on options are also able to get a night-vision assistant and head-up display, as well as the phenomenal 1,300-watt, 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System. A 630-watt, 14-speaker Bose surround sound system is also available.
Key trim levels for the A6 2.0T are Premium and Premium Plus, while the 3.0T and TDI start at Premium Plus and are also offered in a Prestige trim. Premium Plus models add Xenon headlamps, keyless start, LED running lamps, a parking-sensor system, upgraded 18-inch wheels and Audi's MMI Touch screen-driven interface with HD Radio, plus navigation with SiriusXM traffic. The top Prestige model steps up to 4-zone climate control, the Bose surround system, heated-and-ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable steering column, LED running lamps, LED ambient lighting, adaptive HID headlamps, Audi side assist with Pre Sense, plus appearance extras.
The S6 is a high-performance variation on the A6 that has a lot in common with the A5--essentially the same seating and interior packaging--but it's a big step up in performance, thanks to its 420-horsepower, 4.0L turbocharged V8 engine, along with a special 7-speed S tronic gearbox and various other performance upgrades. The S6 has a stiffer performance suspension, as well as an air suspension system with variable damping and four modes--Auto, Dynamic, Comfort and Individual. The S6 supports its performance credibility with upgraded ventilated disc brakes with matte-black calipers, a 4-outlet dual exhaust and special 19-inch cast-aluminum wheels. A "cylinder on demand" system can temporarily shut some cylinders off to save fuel, while active engine mounts and active noise cancellation keep it smooth. Inside, the S6 gets special power-adjustable S6 sport seats, Valcona leather seats with diamond stitching, leather steering-wheel trim with colored stitching, illuminated door sills and special sport seats.
